Description

For your consideration is probably the rarest piece that you will find regarding original period Coney Island memorabilia. This item is
from the Margie Schneider Collection as my other other items posted on ebay
.
You don't often come across one that the wrecking ball didn't destroy. This piece is an amazing building ornament that was salvaged from Washington Baths or Child's Restaurant near Steeplechase Park located on the boardwalk in Coney Island (Brooklyn, NY). I believe this is called a Polychrome Terra Cotta of Sea Horses that is in one piece. As you can see in the pictures that I provided, it has its flaws but all intact.
The Washington Baths was opened in 1920 and closed in 1968 and Child's restaurant opened 1923 and still going. A lot of these Terra Cotta designs made for these buildings were
nautical fantasia which combined Spanish Colonial Revival architecture with maritime motifs and technicolor terra-cotta to achieve some serious sea-side splendor. The terra-cotta, originally manufactured by the Atlantic Terra Cotta Company, featured fish, seashells, ships, Sea horses, and even a likeness of Neptune, god of the sea.
This piece was salvaged by one of the demo workers in the 1970s. It came off from its interior of the buildings were it was displayed around the pool in Washington Baths or within Child's Restaurant when it was gutted and closed until 2017 when it reopened to the public again.
It is 100%
original. If you are a historian of Coney Island or a serious collector, this is for you.
If you have any questions, please let me know.
