Old Carved Wood Caroselle Decor Sleigh Panel.
This is such an amazing piece. It was salvaged off of an old wooden carousel. Back in the old days the carousels were created by wood carvers displaying their artistic talents with detailed design . Hundreds of hours went in to making the fairytale like animals to capture the imagination with rich vibrant bright colors This particular piece was off of a chariot that you could climb into to safely and securely enjoy the ride in a seating position . It is very very rare for items like this to surface let alone in such good condition. This carving features a cherub with a griffin .The piece is very chunky and rich in detail. I definitely believe that the colors have been repainted but all of the original wood detail is still intact. I’m not sure of the true age but led to believe possibly the early teens. You can see that it is very old and definitely with its own story to tell . Most of the carousels nowadays are made of either fiberglass or resin and are hollow poured from fast production molds
In Victorian times, chariots were designed for women to avoid exposing their ankles. The early carousels were pretty risqué for a Victorian woman to ride, Of course, she’d sit side-saddle, but her suitor would be able to hold on to her waist to steady her while the carousel went around and look at her ankle, which was exposed. The carousel also had chariots for the faint of heart or the older women who didn’t want to climb up onto a horse.”
