Description
Passifloresor
Passionflowers
, a design created by French artist, Valerie Dawlet-Dumoulin, and was issued by Hermès as part of its 1996 spring - summer collection. Valerie Dawlet-Dumoulin's design was inspired by the scenic French island of
Ile de Ré
, located less than two miles offshore in the Atlantic west of the French city of La Rochelle on the mainland.
Ile de Ré
has always been valued throughout the ages for its salt marshes as a never ending source of salt, its rich oyster beds, its fertile fields and its mild and sunny climate akin to the southern coast of France. Dawlet chose to showcase a sample of
Ile de Ré's
climate and culture by depicting in this charming design an array of entwined stems of
Ile de Ré
's indigenous variety of passionflower teeming with blooms and fruit surrounding two traditional baskets of woven rushes
,
the
bazeen,
filled with hydrangeas, and the
gourbeuille,
originally
designed to catch fish without a pole while wading the shallows. Additionally, per Hermès' 1996 scarf collection catalogue, the design depicts "a compass card carved in mahogany by M. Cazavent, the renowned marine carpenter who [lived and worked on
Ile de Ré
and] died in 1989 and whose memory we honor." This design has a lettered title (see, photo 5) and is signed by the artist using her maiden name (see, photo 8).
The lush, cool colorway is comprised of a celadon green border and background with design details rendered in cinnabar, coral, jade, deep sky blue, silver, pewter, gold, indigo, sepia, and touches of orange and saffron.
This 1996 scarf is in vintage, 8.75 out of 10, near pristine, rarely used condition (see our condition scale below for reference). There are no condition issues to declare: no stains, spots, holes, thread snags or thread pulls. The silk is crisp, clean, odorless and thick with a smooth hand. The hem is intact, tight and plump. The fabric/care/origin label is attached. This scarf was not a boutique "final sale" item. This scarf measures 35" x 34.75" (88.9cm x 88.3cm). This scarf comes in its Hermès gift box without its tissue.
