Amphenol invented the PL-259 Connector in the 1930's.  The Amphenol Brand PL-259 is arguably the best in the world.
Mechanical:
Construction consists of a Nickel Plated Brass Body for durability, a Silver Tip, for ease of soldering & low contact resistance, and a Mica-filled, Phenolic Dielectric known for its permittivity, strength, and higher withstanding voltages over a wide range of frequencies and temperatures.
Bakelite, used as a dielectric by a few manufacturers for PL-259's is brittle, and has a breakdown voltage rating of 300-volts. Amphenols use better quality dielectric materials and are rated at 500-Volts.
