The center conductor is Beryllium-Copper. Beryllium is an element added to copper to strengthen it and to give it high spring quality.
Without spring tension,
the socket would permanently expand

With Spring Tension, the socket exerts pressure on the plug when inserted and will return to it's original size opening when the plug is withdrawn; even after 500 cycles.
