Former President Donald Trump has demanded that Vice President Kamala Harris take a mental agility test to prove she is capable of doing the top job, a few days after reports emerged that the Republican nominee called his opponent “retarded.”
Donald Trump said Harris should take a test for cognitive stamina on social media on Sunday evening, a month after he reportedly called the Democratic nominee “retarded” at a Republican fundraiser in New York, according to the New York Times. The event was attended by big names from the Republican party donor list, including investment banker Warren Stephens and billionaire Joe Ricketts.
Trump also brought up Harris’ interview with CBS on 60 Minutes, which he has previously criticized as heavily edited to make the vice president look better.
Writing on social media platform Truth Social on Sunday, Trump said: “I believe it is very important that Kamala Harris pass a test on Cognitive Stamina and Agility. Her actions have led many to believe that there could be something very wrong with her.
“Even 60 Minutes and CBS, in order to protect Lyin’ Kamala, illegally and unscrupulously replaced an answer she had given, which was totally “bonkers,” with another answer that had nothing to do with the question asked.
“Also, she is slow and lethargic in answering even the easiest of questions. We just went through almost four years of that, we shouldn’t have to do it again!”
The challenge is the latest in a line of insults from Trump that take aim at Harris’ intelligence. In September, Trump branded his rival as “mentally impaired”, and said that her mental issues were worse than those of President Joe Biden.
“All over the world they’re laughing at us,” Trump said. “You know what they’re really laughing at? Kamala. They can’t believe that she’s going to be president. They can’t believe. You talk about cognitive problems? She has bigger cognitive problems than he has in my opinion.”
Attacking candidates for their mental state has been a consistent theme of the 2024 election on both sides. When Biden was still the candidate, a significant amount of the Trump campaign’s rhetoric focused on his age and blunders, culminating in his performance at the first presidential debate.
However, after Harris replaced Biden, Democrats flipped the script, and started attacking Trump over his age and other gaffes. Biden is 81, Trump is 78 and Harris is 59.
Newsweek contacted the Harris campaign for a response to Trump’s comments via email.
